Uptown Apartment

Renovation of an Uptown Chicago apartment under strict budget and time constraints

In a tree-lined street in Uptown Chicago, a stone's throw to Lake Michigan, sits a 1920s courtyard condominium. Within this condo, on the third floor, was a 1-bed apartment in dire need of some TLC. Yet, beneath its worn-torn appearance lies a great opportunity. Fading carpet hid a beautiful hardwood floor that was refinished; oversized appliances were replaced with efficient slimline alternatives; access to storage areas was maximized; heating upgraded; and the bathroom fully-tiled.

The fully renovated kitchen used recycled granite for the countertop, LED cove lighting, and ENERGY STAR appliances. The new fixtures in the bathroom were accompanied by low-flow tanks, faucets, and showerhead. To ensure a healthy indoor environment, the hardwood floor was finished with Zero-VOC (Volatile Organic Content) natural floor finish to prevent toxic off-gassing. Also, Zero-VOC paint was used throughout on the walls, ceiling, and woodwork. All lighting was replaced with CFLs and LEDs for energy conservation.

All this, and we came in 5% under budget!
